Cracked shower or floor tile is almost never a tile defect. It is movement — a subfloor that flexes more than the tile can tolerate, a missing expansion joint, or a failed mortar bond underneath. Replacing the cracked tile without fixing the movement means the crack comes back in the same place.
In older Taylors and Greer homes we test the floor for deflection before quoting anything. If the subfloor moves, the fix is stiffening the floor first — and we will tell you that even though it makes the quote larger than the one you were hoping for.
Sometimes. If the tile is sound, the substrate is dry and the grout is simply worn or stained, regrouting is a legitimate fix and we will do it. If the grout is failing because water is already getting behind the tile, regrouting only hides the leak.
The clearest signs are hollow sound when you tap the tile, lippage you can catch a fingernail on, grout lines that change width across the wall, cuts landing at eye level, and tile running straight into the shower pan without a waterproofing transition.

Cracked tile is almost always caused by movement, not by defective tile. The usual causes are a subfloor that flexes too much, a missing expansion joint, or tile that lost its bond to the substrate. Replacing the tile without addressing the movement means the crack returns in the same spot.
If the tile is still bonded, the substrate is dry and the grout is simply worn, regrouting is a legitimate repair and we will do it. If the tile sounds hollow, there are soft spots, or there is a musty smell, water is already behind the tile and regrouting would only cover the leak.
We do small repairs. A few cracked tiles, a failing grout line, or a loose threshold are all jobs we take. Most tile contractors in Greenville will not quote work this small, which is a large part of why homeowners call us.
We try, and we are honest about the odds. Tile lines get discontinued and dye lots shift even within the same product. If you have spare tile from the original installation, keep it — that is the best match you will ever get. If not, we look for the closest current equivalent and show it to you before installing.
Common signs are a musty smell, discolored or soft drywall on the other side of the shower wall, loose or hollow-sounding tile near the floor, and grout that keeps cracking in the same place after repair. Any of those means the problem is behind the surface.
